Sant Adrià de Besòs will undergo an unprecedented urban renewal. Inditex and Alcampo will invest more than 9 million in a new boulevard and two bridges. The project will change the connection between the centre and the coast. The operation includes decontamination and improvements to public spaces.

The arrival of Inditex and Alcampo in Sant Adrià de Besòs marks a before and after for those travelling between the centre and the beach. The comprehensive refurbishment of Avinguda de la Platja, financed by both companies, will bring a visible transformation to one of the main urban approaches to the coast.

The plan includes creating a modern boulevard over 640 metres, with wider pavements, more greenery and a single one-way traffic lane. This intervention seeks to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, facilitating a direct connection between the heart of Sant Adrià and the coast. In addition, two new footbridges will be built over the Rodalies railway line, linking the surroundings of the future office buildings with the Tres Xemeneies area, improving mobility and safety.

Total investment in these works amounts to €9.17 million, of which €8.42 million is allocated to the urban redevelopment and €592,000 to the viaducts. Construction and refurbishment work will take place simultaneously, and the companies will also take responsibility for decontaminating the land, affected by historic industrial waste. The removal of toxic materials is estimated to cost €5.36 million.

The urban-planning agreement requires Inditex and Alcampo to pay €3.77 million to the public administration as a capital gain from the change in land use, an amount that will be used to expand public housing in Sant Adrià. The Consorcio del Besòs will manage these funds and oversee the transformation of the area, while the council expects to receive €1.33 million annually in taxes from the new buildings.

The operation also includes payment of €4.27 million for demolitions and almost one million in management costs, bringing the total bill to €19.75 million. In addition, the companies will have to hand over urbanised land and restore the iconic chimney of the former CELO factory, which could be moved to a nearby public space for preservation.

For decades, Avinguda de la Platja has been a secondary artery, marked by its industrial presence and lack of integration with the coastal surroundings. Its transformation into a boulevard and the creation of new pedestrian and cycling connections seek to reverse that image and turn it into a benchmark axis for sustainable mobility in the metropolitan area. The recovery of heritage elements, such as the CELO chimney, reinforces the link between Sant Adrià's industrial memory and urban future.
