Sant Jordi grows in Barcelona without La Rambla and with a record number of stalls
Barcelona is preparing for a record-breaking Sant Jordi, with more than 400 book and rose stalls across the city. This year’s major novelty is the absence of La Rambla, which is outside the circuit because of ongoing works.
In total, there will be 425 professional stalls, most devoted to books, many of them with author signings. These will be joined by numerous stands in front of bookshops, further broadening the offering and reinforcing the event's mass appeal.
The route is being redistributed towards areas such as Portal de l’Àngel, Plaça Nova and the area around the Cathedral, extending as far as Via Laietana. Thoroughfares such as Passeig de Sant Joan and Lluís Companys will also become more prominent, concentrating family-oriented and specialist literature offerings.
Forecasts point to record figures if the weather cooperates. Last year, millions of books and roses were sold, and this year is expected to exceed even those figures in a more decentralised edition.
The model is committed to distributing visitor flow and improving mobility, while maintaining the atmosphere of the Diada in different parts of the city.
Sant Jordi will be spread more widely throughout the city, which may bring the atmosphere and the stalls closer to areas that previously played a lesser role. It will also help avoid large crowds in a single place, making the experience more comfortable for those out for a stroll. For many residents, it means experiencing the Diada closer to home and with fewer crowds.
