Santa Coloma de Gramenet prepares record €115 million investment through 2030 in housing, schools and sport

Santa Coloma de Gramenet is preparing historic investment through to 2030. The City Council will apply for a loan of 21.9 million to accelerate key projects. Housing, education and sport will take centre stage. Spending under the plan is already under way.

The immediate future of Santa Coloma de Gramenet is being shaped in its streets, schools and sports centres. The City Council has presented an investment plan that promises to change the city through to 2030, with a total budget of 115 million euros. This figure, unprecedented in the municipality's recent history, seeks to meet residents' most urgent needs: affordable housing, refurbished educational facilities and modern sports spaces.

To make this ambitious project a reality, the council will apply for a loan of 21.9 million euros. Mayor Mireia González has explained that the budget amendment will be approved at the full council meeting, backed by the local government's absolute majority. A quarter of the plan is already being implemented, with visible works such as the new Policía Local station, the redevelopment of avenida de la Generalitat and the second phase of the Refugi de la Biodiversitat del Besòs.

The plan is structured around three strategic priorities: education, sport and housing. In education, priority is given to modernising schools and increasing places at municipal nurseries for children aged 0 to 3. In sport, plans include refurbishing sports centres and building two new facilities: a temporary one in Safaretjos and a large sports hall in Can Zam. Investment in schools and sports centres alone exceeds 54 million euros.

Housing is becoming firmly established as a political priority, with two lines of action: creating housing on land designated for public facilities for young and older people, and renovating residential buildings belonging to communities of owners, for which seven million euros will be allocated under the Pla de Barris. The aim is to improve quality of life and make it easier to access housing against a backdrop of rising prices.

The City Council emphasises that some of the funding comes from public funds from other administrations, such as the PAI, the Pla de Barris, the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona and the Diputació de Barcelona. The requested loan is justified by the municipality's sound finances, which allow it to take on debt without putting other pending investments at risk.

The Refugi de la Biodiversitat del Besòs, one of the projects under way, has become a local benchmark for restoring urban natural spaces. This site beside the river Besòs combines green areas, educational trails and conservation activities for native wildlife. Its second phase will expand the accessible area and strengthen the connection between nature and the city, establishing Santa Coloma as an example of environmental integration in the metropolitan area.
