Santa Coloma steps up its campaign against illegal electric scooters: 700 seized in five years
The Policía Local de Santa Coloma has seized more than 700 electric scooters since 2021 and has issued thousands of fines for speeding, riding on pavements, and other offences.
The Ayuntamiento de Santa Coloma de Gramenet has stepped up its fight against the improper use of electric scooters, a phenomenon that is a concern because of its impact on road safety and urban coexistence. Between 2021 and October 2025, the Policía Local imposed 3,686 fines and confiscated 729 scooters, mostly for exceeding the permitted 25 km/h.
The most common offences are riding on pavements (20.3% of cases), carrying two people (12.4%), running red lights (8.5%) or riding with headphones. According to the council, this behaviour puts both pedestrians and drivers at risk and harms coexistence in public space.
The Ayuntamiento maintains a policy of “zero tolerance” towards offences and recalls that Vehículos de Movilidad Personal (VMP) must comply with the same traffic rules as other users. The measure forms part of the local safe and sustainable mobility plan, which seeks to adapt the city to the new challenges of urban transport.
