The low-cost era ends: AVLO disappears and rail travel between Barcelona and Madrid will become more expensive
Spain’s busiest rail corridor is saying goodbye to its cheap option.
From 8 September, Renfe will permanently withdraw AVLO trains between Barcelona and Madrid following technical problems with Talgo rolling stock that had already halted the service in July.
The route will once again be served only by AVE trains, returning to the original model with which high-speed service began in 2008. Renfe claims that the move will improve the travel experience with greater comfort and better onboard services, but passengers will feel it in their wallets: the average ticket price will rise from €37.8 on AVLO to €61.9 on AVE.
Timetables and frequencies will remain unchanged, and those who already had tickets will be rebooked onto AVE trains. On other routes, such as Andalucía y Galicia, AVLO trains will continue to run… for now.
