Madrid creates the Council of Women: a new body that will strengthen equality policy
Madrid has created the Council of Women, a new body that will have a voice in municipal decisions and influence equality policies and the fight against gender violence.
The municipal authorities have created the Consejo de Mujeres, an advisory body that will participate in the development of policies on equality and the fight against gender-based violence. The new body aims to make women's participation in municipal political life more systematic and visible.
The Consejo is made up of representatives from different areas of the City Council, municipal political groups, social and professional associations, as well as experts in equality policies. As noted by the delegate for Políticas Sociales, Familia e Igualdad, José Fernández, the mission of this body is to promote real, not merely formal, changes in the municipal agenda.
The Consejo replaces the previous body, which had been operating since 2002, and will work in accordance with the updated municipal regulations. Its functions include drafting proposals for the development of equality policies, coordinating specialised organisations, and promoting initiatives aimed at protecting women, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability.
At the first session, the Estrategia de Igualdad de Madrid 2025-2028 was presented, which includes 100 measures with a total budget of 261 million euros. The funds will be allocated to the development of support programmes and the improvement of prevention and care systems for victims of gender-based violence. The measures will be implemented in the city's 21 districts, where comprehensive support centres for women will be opened.
