The Madrid–Málaga AVE closure complicates Easter travel
The high-speed connection between Madrid and Málaga remains interrupted. The journey requires combining train and bus. The closure affects those travelling at Easter. The incident has already lasted more than two months. Madrid adjusts its mobility plans.
The disruption was caused by a landslide that damaged the railway infrastructure, cutting off direct service on one of the country’s most heavily used routes. Since then, journeys have become longer and require rescheduling, making weekend getaways and family visits more complicated.
In response, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the mayor of Málaga have called on the Ministerio de Transportes to urgently restore the full AVE connection. Both warn of the impact on mobility and economic activity.
Meanwhile, María Zambrano station has become a key hub for managing transfers and the flow of travellers arriving via alternative routes.
At a time when thousands of people are adjusting their plans, the lack of a direct connection highlights the fragility of mobility during periods of high demand and forces a rethink of travel between two of the country’s main destinations.
