New law requires recycling of leftovers in bars and restaurants
España introduces new rules to reduce food waste, requiring supermarkets, bars and restaurants to manage surplus food more effectively. The measure is already in force and affects consumers and businesses across the country.
Supermarkets will be required to donate products they are unable to sell before their expiry date, as well as apply discounts to those nearing expiration. The aim is clear: to prevent good food from ending up in the bin.
Bars and restaurants will be obliged to separate and dispose of food waste in specific containers for recycling, strengthening control over food waste.
The regulations include financial penalties for non-compliance, with fines ranging from 2,000 to 500,000 euros in the most serious cases.
These measures mean changes to daily operations for both large chains and small businesses, which will need to adapt their processes to the new requirements.
Food waste is a challenge affecting the whole country, not just the big cities. With these regulations, España aims to move towards a more sustainable and supportive model, where reducing waste becomes a shared responsibility among authorities, businesses, and citizens.
