Worker dies after falling 30 metres at Movistar Arena
Wednesday afternoon brought a severe blow at Movistar Arena, one of Madrid's busiest venues. A 50-year-old worker died after falling from around 30 metres while carrying out work on the roof of the pavilion, located in Plaza de Felipe II.
The accident occurred at around 14:35 inside the venue. When SUMMA 112 medical staff arrived, the worker was in cardiorespiratory arrest. Emergency teams performed advanced resuscitation manoeuvres for around 20 minutes, but ultimately could only confirm his death.
The scene had a strong impact on the colleagues working in the arena. Three of them suffered anxiety attacks after witnessing what happened and were treated by a SUMMA 112 psychologist at the venue itself.
Madrid City Council Firefighters and Municipal Police officers also went to the Movistar Arena and have taken charge of the investigation. For now, no further details have emerged about the exact circumstances of the fall or the safety measures in place in the work area.
The incident once again puts the focus on preventing occupational risks, especially in work at height inside large facilities. According to figures cited by Cadena SER, by April 2026, 29 people had died in workplace accidents in the Community of Madrid and more than 29,600 accidents had been recorded.
The Movistar Arena, formerly the Palacio de los Deportes, is part of Madrid’s cultural and sporting routine, with concerts, matches and major events almost every week. But behind that constant schedule there are also installations, maintenance, technical work and risky operations that are rarely seen from outside. This Wednesday’s accident recalls that less visible side of major venues: those who prepare them so that the city can continue to function as a stage.
