La Pedriza introduces an electric bus to ease traffic jams and protect the area
La Pedriza gains a new tool to manage its busiest weekends. Manzanares el Real has launched a 100% electric shuttle bus linking the car parks available in the municipality with the entrance to the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, in the Cantocochino area.
The service will collect visitors from the town's car parks and travel along La Pedriza avenue to the park entrance. The idea is simple: leave the car earlier, take collective transport and prevent the entrance to one of Madrid's most visited natural spaces from once again becoming a bottleneck of vehicles.
The vehicle has been funded with European Next Generation funds and arrives as reinforcement for the existing shuttle system. In 2026, the free shuttle bus to La Pedriza operates at weekends and on public holidays, running between Manzanares el Real, the Rotonda del Montañero, the La Pedriza barrier and Canto Cochino.
Private-vehicle access to the area has already been regulated for years. During the busiest months, the barrier and Canto Cochino car parks operate with restrictions, and in summer overnight parking inside La Pedriza is prohibited between 23:00 and 7:30.
The measure comes at a sensitive time. With good weather, La Pedriza attracts hikers, families, climbers and bathers, but it also puts pressure on roads, car parks, waste services and residential areas of Manzanares el Real. Residents of the La Ermita neighbourhood have recently reported the massive influx of visitors and problems with traffic, noise and access to homes at weekends.
For visitors, the change may make the outing more convenient: park in the municipality, take the shuttle and avoid the uncertainty of arriving late and finding the barrier closed or no spaces available. For the natural environment, each fewer car at the entrance means fewer emissions, less noise and less pressure on an area that cannot grow at the pace of demand.
La Pedriza is one of Madrid's great natural refuges, but precisely for that reason it needs limits and alternatives. The new electric bus will not solve overcrowding on its own, although it does point in a fairly logical direction: if thousands of people want to enjoy the same landscape, the way they get there also has to change.
