Multi-vehicle accident on the M-50 leaves a woman seriously injured in Villa de Vallecas

The worst affected was a woman of around 50, who was trapped inside her car after the impact. Madrid City Council Firefighters had to extricate her before Samur-Protección Civil medical staff could stabilise her and transfer her to Hospital 12 de Octubre.

The driver was evacuated conscious, although in a serious condition due to back and hip injuries. Two other people, a man and a woman, were also treated in the same accident for minor bruising that did not require hospital transfer.

According to the initial reconstruction, the incident began with a minor collision followed by further crashes between the vehicles involved. The investigation will now have to clarify the exact sequence of the accident and whether factors such as speed, following distance or night-time visibility played a part.

Traffic was particularly affected on the inner carriageway of the M-50, around kilometre 38. There were queues and slow-moving traffic for several hours, complicating the return journey for people using this route to connect Villa de Vallecas with other parts of the metropolitan area.

The M-50 carries heavy daily traffic from cars, commercial vehicles and commuters travelling between outlying municipalities. At night, when traffic seems to flow more freely, accidents can have equally serious consequences: higher speeds, reduced visibility and less time to react.

The incident once again highlights the fragility of these major Madrid ring roads. They are roads designed to absorb heavy traffic and quickly connect the outskirts, but any pile-up can turn a seemingly clear stretch into a critical point for drivers and emergency services within minutes.
