A multimillion mishap that ended well: 60 lottery tickets forgotten on a Barcelona bench are recovered

On 3 December, a Barcelona resident sat down on a bench in Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample and came across an abandoned handbag. Inside, along with personal belongings, were 60 tickets for the Lotería de Navidad and a name written in pen.

The woman didn’t hesitate and called 112. Shortly afterwards, a patrol from the Guardia Urbana collected the bag and took it to the Oficina de Objetos Perdidos del Ayuntamiento. From that moment, an almost detective-like task began: cross-checking data, following leads, and tracing the owner.

The search led officials to Cantabria, where the owner of the bag was, unaware that she had left much of her Christmas hopes behind in Barcelona. Days later, she recovered the bag with all the tickets intact.

The episode, which took place in the middle of the Christmas season, leaves a simple but uncommon lesson: luck doesn’t always depend on the draw—sometimes it starts with an honest gesture and ends with a conclusion that restores your faith in the city.
