A tree falls in the heart of Eixample and leaves a motorcyclist injured
Monday afternoon brought an unusual scene to Eixample. A large tree fell at the junction of València and Bruc streets and struck a motorcyclist passing through the area. The rider suffered minor injuries, but residents, pedestrians and drivers who were there at the time received a serious fright.
The incident occurred at around 17:00 and quickly forced traffic in the surrounding area to be stopped. The Guardia Urbana cordoned off the area and diverted traffic while a SEM ambulance attended to the affected motorcyclist. For a few minutes, the sight of the fallen tree lying across the carriageway turned an ordinary Eixample corner into a point of maximum attention.
The fall also affected public transport. Several stops on the H10 line were temporarily cancelled, complicating travel for those who use this route to move between neighbourhoods. In an area as busy as València and Bruc, any closure is immediately felt in the afternoon routine.
Bombers de Barcelona and Parcs i Jardins teams worked to remove the tree and inspect the surrounding area in order to restore normality. The operation required the deployment of machinery and municipal staff, as well as keeping access restricted while the area was secured.
The episode once again puts the focus on Barcelona’s urban trees. The city has thousands of specimens that provide shade, reduce heat and form part of the everyday landscape, but some also suffer water stress, lack of space in tree pits or structural weakness accumulated over the years.
Barcelona has experienced similar incidents in recent times, especially during wind or storm episodes. The fall of a palm tree in the Raval in 2023, which caused the death of a young woman, remains very present in the memory of many residents and reinforced attention to the maintenance of trees and palm trees in the city.
In dense neighbourhoods such as the Eixample, where trees coexist with traffic, motorbikes, terraces and very busy pavements, any failure can have swift consequences. That is why every incident of this kind raises the same question: how to take better care of urban greenery without turning it into a risk for those who experience the city on foot, by bicycle, by motorbike or on public transport.
