A new park in Las Rozas will remember Isa Guerrero and unite her neighbourhood
Las Rozas will have a children's park next to Los Olivos school in memory of Isa Guerrero. The initiative, promoted by the educational community, begins in March and seeks to create a meeting space for families and neighbours.
This spring, Las Rozas will add a new green space designed for families and, above all, for those whose day-to-day lives revolve around Los Olivos school. The Town Council has approved the creation of ‘Isa’s Park’, a tribute to Isa Guerrero, a pupil at the school who died last August from cancer. The decision, taken unanimously by the municipal plenary session, responds to a proposal that originated at the school itself and was supported by the educational community and local residents.
The park will be located on Camino de Perales, directly opposite the school, and will have a play area, a sandpit for younger children and an artificial-turf multi-sports court. The project, with a budget of just over €129,000, plans to begin work at the start of March and open the space before the summer. The site will be separated from the car park by child-safety fencing to ensure children’s safety.
During the plenary session, Isa’s father and representatives of the Cris Contra el Cáncer association were present, accompanying councillors at an emotional moment. The governing team stressed that Isa’s story has helped raise awareness of the reality of childhood cancer and of the importance of promoting research in this field. The initiative also coincides with the recent observance of International Childhood Cancer Day, reinforcing the collective meaning of the tribute.
The new park will not only remember Isa, but also aims to become a meeting point for families, pupils and local residents in the area. Madrid is already starting to move in this direction: urban spaces born out of community involvement that seek to improve the daily lives of those who enjoy them.
The area around CEIP Los Olivos, in Las Rozas, has been transforming in recent years to adapt to the growth of the neighbourhood and the needs of young families. The area, well connected and with nearby services, has become one of the municipality’s most active hubs. Initiatives such as Isa’s Park reinforce this participatory character and show how urban change can arise from the community itself.
