New park in Montecarmelo: more green areas and an open debate in the neighbourhood
Northern Madrid is preparing for a visible change in its urban landscape. The Montecarmelo neighbourhood will have a new 6.3-hectare park, a project that seeks to transform the daily life of people living in the area.
Madrid City Council announces (23–24 Mar) new Montecarmelo park (Fuencarral-El Pardo): 6.3 ha (≈Fuente Berro); €3.9M (€2.6M cleaning depot plot + €1.8M M-40 strip; +€1.3M Parque Lineal works from Nov 2025). 1,652 trees (+18,500 plants): pines/holm oaks/olive trees/almond trees/carob trees/willows (Mediterranean). Areas: children's/dog/calisthenics/picnic/fountains/cycle lane/viewpoint; lighting/drainage/irrigation. It surrounds the cleaning depot (plant screen; residents' opposition: 14k signatures/7 demonstrations/European Parliament; they call for relocation to industrial land).
The municipal investment, exceeding €3.9 million, will make it possible to create a green space with more than 1,600 trees and multiple areas designed for leisure and sport. The design includes a cycle lane, picnic areas, fountains, sports areas and a specific space for dogs, with Mediterranean species such as pines, olive trees and almond trees.
The project arrives alongside an ongoing neighbourhood debate. The location of the park coincides with the area planned for the cleaning depot, a facility that has generated opposition in the neighbourhood. Residents' associations have promoted protests and collected thousands of signatures to call for its relocation, questioning whether the green area serves as a solution to the conflict.
The City Council argues that the new park will be a meeting place that will improve the quality of life in Montecarmelo, with renewal of the lighting and urban furniture to guarantee an accessible and safe environment.
The transformation responds to the growth of the neighbourhood, one of the most recent in the capital, where demand for green spaces and shared living continues to increase. The creation of this park reinforces the role of natural areas as a key element in urban development and in the daily life of Madrid.
