The new park next to the Metropolitano will be named Benedicto XVI
San Blas-Canillejas will gain a new green space of over 105,000 square metres next to the Metropolitano stadium and the future Ciudad del Deporte. The park will be named Benedicto XVI and will offer areas for walking, playing, and relaxing outdoors.
Madrid City Council’s Governing Board has approved the name of the site, whose construction has a budget of 7.4 million euros. The work will transform a large area of the district and strengthen the connection between sports facilities and nearby neighbourhoods.
The project will include children’s play areas, spaces intended for older people and a network of walks. The aim is to create an accessible space for families, athletes and residents seeking new leisure options close to home.
The location, beside the Metropolitano, will make it possible to integrate the park into one of the areas that has changed most in recent years. The arrival of new facilities and the future Ciudad del Deporte are altering an area previously marked by large infrastructure and extensive undeveloped plots.
The name forms part of the municipal commitment to honour Popes Benedict XVI and Francis with two parks in the capital. In this case it is a newly created space, while Caramuel Park, in Latina, is awaiting adoption of the name Papa Francisco-Caramuel.
The new green area seeks to offset the growth in sporting and urban activity with more spaces for everyday use. Residents will be able to use it both for walking and exercising and for spending the afternoon or accompanying children.
San Blas-Canillejas thus strengthens its range of parks in an area receiving ever more visitors. The combination of green areas, sports facilities and new pedestrian routes will change how the surroundings of the stadium are used beyond match days.
