A rubbish tyrannosaur: the footprint Catalan families leave in only four years
In Catalonia, almost unnoticed, every family of four feeds a monster that keeps growing: rubbish. According to the Agència de Residus, in just one year that family generates 1,908 kilos of waste; in four, the figure climbs to 7.6 tonnes, the weight of a Tyrannosaurus rex.
Each Catalan produces 477 kilos of waste per year, more than the Spanish average (467) and still far from the European target of recycling at least 55% before 2025. Currently, recycling stands at 40.3%, well below the desired level, while managing this waste already accounts for 5% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Although waste production has dropped since the 2007 record, the trend remains worrying. The data serve as a warning: if we don't change our consumption and recycling habits, this dinosaur of waste will keep growing until it devours everything.
