An unexpected hotel trick: why expert travellers always ask to change toilet paper

Two simple gestures can make a difference to the hotel experience.

A former hotel employee has revealed a detail that many tourists overlook and which could change the way they stay. Janessa Richard, a former hotel employee, has explained why the most experienced travellers always ask for their toilet-paper roll to be changed when they arrive in their room.

The reason is simply a combination of laziness and cost-saving. According to Richard, in many accommodations the cleaning staff do not replace the toilet paper if a ‘reasonable’ amount remains from the previous guest. This means that the same roll may have passed through several hands before reaching the next occupant. It is an unhygienic habit, considering that a new roll is included in the price of the accommodation.

That is why the most savvy tourists do not hesitate to ask for a new one when they check in. But that is not the end of it: the former employee also recalled that if a guest leaves before breakfast, they are entitled to ask for a packed lunch. It is a useful option for those with an early flight who do not want to forgo their included meal.
