A Gràcia resident finds an exotic snake on their balcony

A resident of the Gràcia neighbourhood discovered an unusual visitor on his balcony this week: a specimen of green and yellow ratsnake, an exotic snake native to Asia which, although striking, poses no danger to humans.

The animal was detected in a home in the area and the Rural Agents were quickly alerted. They went to the site to identify and capture the reptile without incident. After it was collected, the snake was taken to a specialised exotic-fauna centre, where it is being assessed before being relocated to a natural environment suitable for its species.

Although it has not been determined how it reached that balcony in the Barcelona district, experts recall the importance of not releasing exotic animals into urban or natural environments, as they can disrupt local ecosystems.

The scene has surprised residents, but it has also served as a reminder that living alongside biodiversity — even unexpected biodiversity — is also part of life in a city like Barcelona.
