A rollover in the Glòries tunnel brings traffic to a standstill in the middle of the night
Barcelona experienced a striking traffic incident overnight at one of its most sensitive approaches. A vehicle overturned at the entrance to the Glòries tunnel and forced the underground carriageway to close for around an hour and a half.

The accident left two people slightly injured, who were attended to by emergency services. Although the crash was spectacular, no serious injuries were reported, and the operation focused on assisting the occupants, securing the area and removing the vehicle from the carriageway.
The closure affected both directions of the tunnel, complicating night-time movement around Gran Via and Plaça de les Glòries. Although the incident occurred outside peak hours, the tunnel is a key part of connecting the entrance to and exit from Barcelona along the C-31 axis.
Emergency personnel and teams responsible for managing traffic travelled to the scene. The priority was to avoid new risks inside the tunnel, a space where any stopped or overturned vehicle requires swift action for safety.
Traffic was interrupted while the injured people were attended to and the damaged vehicle was removed. Once cleaning and checks had been completed, traffic was able to resume gradually.
The episode recalls the fragility of some strategic points in Barcelona’s mobility. Every day, Glòries absorbs thousands of journeys between the Besòs, the centre and the coast, and any incident in the tunnel can alter routes even when it occurs at dawn.
For drivers, the recommendation is once again the usual one in this type of situation: check traffic conditions before entering the city and follow the signed diversions if there are closures. On underground roads, moreover, keeping one’s distance and reducing speed can make the difference in the event of sudden braking or an unexpected manoeuvre.
The accident was a brief but visible interruption to infrastructure that is already part of the city’s daily functioning. The Glòries tunnel makes it possible to gain smoother flow at surface level, but when it stops, even during the night, the whole area feels the impact.
