A fault on line 4 disrupts travel between Argüelles and Alonso Martínez
The closure on Metro line 4 affects thousands of passengers this Sunday. The section between Argüelles and Alonso Martínez will be closed for several hours. The C03 bus covers the route while the incident is resolved.
On Sunday 16 March 2026, Metro de Madrid line 4 suffered a serious technical fault that has kept the section between Argüelles and Alonso Martínez closed since early morning. Thousands of Madrid residents have had to reorganise their journeys and weekend plans in the very centre.
Metro de Madrid has reported on X that the incident is due to technical causes and that resolving it will take several hours. As an alternative, EMT has activated the C03 bus to cover the affected route, although with much longer waiting times and lower frequency than the underground.
The incident hits neighbourhoods such as Chamberí, Justicia and Argüelles especially hard: areas with high cultural, commercial and leisure activity on Sundays. Many users opt for alternative routes (lines 1, 2, 5, 6 or Cercanías) or adjust schedules to arrive at commitments on time.
A Sunday without line 4 in the heart of the city complicated mobility for thousands of people crossing the centre for brunch, shopping, cinema, theatre or family visits. On a day of high recreational and cultural use, the fault generated knock-on delays, overcrowding on other lines and widespread frustration, once again highlighting the vulnerability of the underground to technical incidents and the urgent need to improve redundancy and reliability on key network corridors.
