Unprecedented €30,000 aid seeks to bring home ownership closer for young people

The Government has launched a proposal intended to mark a before and after in housing policy: aid of up to €30,000 for young people under 35 who choose rent-to-buy in social housing.

The formula would make it possible to live as a tenant for years and use that assistance to deduct part of the final price, protected against speculation.

The plan, which will be rolled out between 2026 and 2029, also includes rent-default insurance and grants of up to 10,800 euros to buy a home in small municipalities, with the intention of revitalising rural areas.

However, not everyone views the measure favourably. Yolanda Díaz has called it counterproductive because “it will only push rents upwards”. Trade unions are calling for going further and genuinely strengthening the public housing stock.

The announcement comes amid a boom in the property market: the price of second-hand housing has risen 12.8% in a year and rents are at record highs. In this scenario, the Government insists that “there are no shortcuts”, but argues that these measures are a firm step towards structural solutions.
