Usera turns Plaça Romana into a great book celebration with free activities and more than 30 authors
The Usera Book Fair fills the Moscardó neighbourhood this weekend with workshops, storytelling, theatre, book exchanges and signings by more than 30 authors, local bookshops and publishers in a free event for all audiences.
Usera brings Book Day forward with a fair packed with free activities. Workshops, storytelling and theatre enliven the Moscardó neighbourhood. More than 30 authors and local bookshops are taking part. The event turns the weekend into a cultural celebration.
This weekend, Usera’s plaza Romana becomes a meeting point for people seeking different, free plans in Madrid. Usera Book Fair starts on Friday and runs until Sunday, ahead of Book Day and filling the Moscardó neighbourhood with activities for all audiences.
The programme brings together more than 30 authors, bookshops and publishers from the district, sharing space with readers and the curious. Entry is free and the fair opens on Friday and Saturday from 17:30, while Sunday activities begin at 11:30 in the morning.
Among the permanent activities are reading stations and a book-exchange point, ideal for discovering new titles or being surprised by a literary “blind date”. There will also be baskets of new releases and a wall where attendees can leave their recommendations.
Children have their place with storytelling and a travelling library on Friday. On Sunday, the family programme is completed with a joint workshop and a theatre performance devoted to Andalusian comedies, bringing reading closer to all ages.
On Saturday, the fair adds a Chinese workshop and a literary quiz organised by the neighbourhood association’s reading club, with prizes awarded on Sunday. In addition, those inspired to write can take part in the short-story, poetry and comic competition, whose winners will be announced on Saturday 18 April and receive €150 per category.
The event is also an opportunity to meet local writers such as Luna Martín Martín, Marta González Peláez, Francisco Javier Mata, Anita Blanco, José Luis Labad and Irina Moroct, who will sign copies and share impressions with attendees. Teresa Olalla Tomey, one of the invited authors, has shown her enthusiasm on social networks for taking part in an event so linked to the neighbourhood.
Usera Book Fair is the result of collaboration between the district Writers’ Association and the Moscardó Neighbourhood Association, which each year bring together local talent and cultural initiatives in a close setting. Initiatives of this kind strengthen neighbourhood cultural life and turn everyday spaces into places for meeting and creativity. Madrid is already beginning to move in that direction.
