Barcelona plans to display a historic Tramvia Blau carriage in plaça Kennedy

Barcelona City Council is studying the installation of one of the historic Tramvia Blau carriages in Plaça Kennedy as part of a commemorative exhibition for the emblematic tram’s 125 years, before its definitive reopening.

The proposal follows mayor Jaume Collboni’s announcement of the service’s restoration, with works expected by the end of 2027. The municipal government, at the PP’s request, undertakes to analyse the feasibility of placing the carriage at the start of the route, in Plaça Kennedy, as a symbol of the memory and history of this classic transport service.

The process will be long: in 2026, a public consultation will open to gather residents’ views and the urban-planning procedure will then begin. The aim is to include the project in next year’s budget, coinciding with the 125th anniversary, so that works can begin before the end of 2027.

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi councillor Maria Eugènia Gay highlights the importance of making the Tramvia Blau legacy visible, although she recalls that a technical study will be needed to guarantee the carriage’s preservation.

The tram’s return to Avinguda del Tibidabo will still take time. The service will not resume until 2031 or even 2033, because a comprehensive remodelling of the avenue and the construction of an underground rainwater storage tank must first be undertaken, raising the project’s cost to between 40 and 45 million euros and extending the timetable.
