Vallecas celebrates 75 years as part of Madrid with pride in its neighbourhood
Vallecas marks 75 years as part of Madrid, maintaining the working-class spirit of the neighbourhood, its passion for rock and football, and the call to preserve the identity of home for the new generations.
The district commemorates the anniversary of its incorporation into Madrid while preserving its working-class character and unique identity. The musician Ramoncín, an honorary resident of Vallecas, stressed: “We have to care for the neighbourhood as if it were our home and pass that on to children.”
In the past, Vallecas was an independent municipality; its history dates back to the 15th century, although its urbanisation began only in the 19th century. Today, the neighbourhood is known for rock, football and the active life of its residents.
Ramoncín also called for the footbridge separating Vallecas from the rest of the city to be demolished, calling it “a border that makes the neighbourhood feel alien”. Mayor Almeida highlighted that Vallecas represents both the history and the future of Madrid, and that local initiatives and projects help to improve it.
