Residents criticise the Museo Thyssen plan in Barcelona despite its approval
The project for the future Museo Carmen Thyssen in Barcelona is moving forward, but not without controversy. The Federació d'Associacions de Veïns de Barcelona has rejected the changes introduced and warns that it may take legal action if substantial changes are not made.
The City Council has provisionally approved the Modificación del Plan General Metropolitano (MPGM), which regulates the establishment of the museum in the Palau Marcet, the former Comedia cinema located on Passeig de Gràcia. The decision went ahead despite objections from neighbourhood organisations, who feel their demands have been ignored. The FAVB criticises the adjustments made to the initial project as insufficient and claims that private interests are being prioritised over the public good.
They also question the model for transferring the space and the lack of public mechanisms such as pre-emption and withdrawal rights, which, in their view, would have allowed for greater institutional control. The organisation also warns of a shift in the city’s urban planning policy. They point out that this type of project could increase tourist pressure and property speculation in already saturated areas, such as the surroundings of Passeig de Gràcia. Meanwhile, the project continues with municipal backing.
