The eviction of a resident in Gràcia sparks protests and reopens the debate on coliving
The neighbourhood of Gràcia has become the epicentre of a new housing mobilisation in Barcelona. The imminent eviction of Txema Escorsa has brought hundreds of residents together in front of his building, in a protest that once again highlights the pressure of the property market in the city.
The building, located on Carrer de Sant Agustí, was acquired by the New Amsterdam Developers fund, which has been converting the flats into co-living accommodation with rooms reaching 950 euros per month. At present, only five of the eleven homes still have long-term tenants.
The conflict reopens the debate about the rise of co-living accommodation in Barcelona, a model that multiplies the profitability of properties but also accelerates the displacement of residents and transforms the city’s social fabric.
