Summer 2026 in Barcelona: all the works, closures and mobility restrictions you need to know about
This summer, getting around Barcelona will require even more planning than usual, so be patient! The City Council, the Generalitat, TMB and Adif have concentrated much of the improvement work in the months with less traffic, resulting in metro closures, traffic restrictions, resurfacing and rail works in different parts of the city.
Barcelona Metro: closures for works
The most significant disruption will be on L1 (the red line). Between 17 July and 28 August, the section between Florida and Plaça de Sants will be out of service because of the complete renewal of the track between Santa Eulàlia and Mercat Nou stations.
On L9/L10 Nord, the section between La Sagrera and Onze de Setembre will be closed from 25 June to 30 August because of work on the La Sagrera macroshaft, a project required to connect the line with its central section in the future. Subsequently, from 31 August to 6 September, the closure will be extended as far as Bon Pastor.
L4 (the yellow line) will also see changes. Verdaguer station will remain closed from 6 July to 30 August because of works to improve the accessibility of the interchange with L5. Trains will continue to run normally on the line, but will not stop at this station.
Another significant project affects the Catalunya interchange between L1 and L3. The passageway connecting the two lines will remain closed from 6 July to 7 September to carry out renewal and asbestos-removal work. During this period, passengers will have to make the change by going up to street level and re-entering the station.
To reduce the impact of these works, TMB will introduce special bus services on the affected sections and strengthen signage and information for users in stations. Before travelling, it is recommended to check the service status and plan the journey in advance.
Rodalies: rail incidents and works

Railway works will also affect travel this summer, especially around Montcada i Reixac and Sant Andreu.
On 22 July, a sinkhole caused during works to put the tracks underground forced the suspension of R2, R2 Nord and R11 services. The incident affected thousands of passengers for several days and required the service to be reorganised with changes and replacement buses.
On 26 July, R2 Nord and R11 services resumed once the ground had been stabilised and safety checks carried out. However, a temporary speed restriction remains in the area while the undergrounding works continue.
In addition, Rodalies has other scheduled disruptions during the summer. These include:
R3: service changes between L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Puigcerdà because of line-doubling works, with a replacement bus service on some sections. The works will continue until January 2027.
R4 and R8: replacement road service between Martorell Central, Molins de Rei and Rubí Can Vallhonrat from 2 to 9 August.
R1: between 6 July and 2 August, the last night trains between Blanes and Maçanet-Massanes will be replaced by buses because of infrastructure-improvement works.
More than 24 major works projects in the city
This summer, Barcelona is carrying out 24 main projects and almost twenty resurfacing works, affecting around 100,000 square metres of carriageway. The authorities are taking advantage of the months with less traffic to speed up the works.
The works are concentrated on:
Balmes, in the final stretch of its remodelling.
La Rambla, where transformation works continue.
Avinguda Meridiana.
Glòries.
The L8 FGC extension works.
The covering of Ronda de Dalt.
Traffic closures and resurfacing
In addition to the major works, spot resurfacing is carried out throughout the summer, requiring lanes or streets to be closed for one or more days.
During these works, there may be:
bus diversions;
temporary restrictions on private traffic;
changes to access to some neighbourhoods;
changes to usual cycling and pedestrian routes.

Incidents related to the works
The summer has also been marked by several infrastructure incidents:
a sinkhole linked to the L9 works in El Putxet;
the collapse of a shaft in Vallbona;
a gas explosion during accessibility work at Plaça de Sants station, which left several workers injured.
Although the three incidents are unrelated, they have led to additional inspections and some occasional delays to the works.
Recommendations for getting around Barcelona this summer
If you are travelling around Barcelona this summer, it is worth:
checking the metro status before setting out;
allowing a little more time for journeys;
prioritising public transport where possible;
checking bus diversions if the destination is in works areas;
checking the Rodalies status before travelling to the airport or nearby towns.
The works will be completed progressively during the summer, so disruptions will change depending on each project. Before travelling, it is advisable to check the status of metro and Rodalies services.
