The Tren del Cid returns: a nostalgic getaway to Burgos on historic rails
On 24 May, an eighties locomotive will depart from Madrid to rediscover the route to Burgos, with stops, scenery, and a taste of Castile.
Neither high speed nor futuristic carriages: this spring, the journey is measured in landscapes, not minutes. The Tren del Cid, an initiative that revives traditional rail journeys, will depart on Saturday 24 May from Madrid-Chamartín for Burgos, travelling one of the oldest routes in the north of the peninsula. On board the 1980s Train, passengers will cross unique scenery ranging from the lushness of Monte del Pardo to the rugged passes of the Sierra de Guadarrama, before descending towards the broad horizons of Castile. The trip includes stops at Pitis, Villalba and Valladolid, offering a visual experience no AVE can match.
At the destination, the city of Burgos will welcome travellers with a choice of two options: joining a guided tour of the historic centre, available with booking, or simply letting themselves be carried along by its streets, trying roast suckling lamb or enjoying a walk around the cathedral. The return will be at the end of the afternoon, with arrival in Madrid scheduled for 22:30. Tickets are available on the ALSA platform, with departures from selected stations. The seat is the same for both legs, and the experience promises more than transport: it is a return to the pleasure of unhurried travel, where the destination begins from the first kilometre.
