Free buses return to the Sierra de Guadarrama to encourage sustainable tourism
The Community of Madrid relaunches the free bus service connecting the capital with some of the most emblematic spots in the Sierra de Guadarrama. This initiative, designed to reduce tourism’s environmental impact and ease traffic in protected natural areas, has been available again since this spring.
From Saturday 20 April, people from Madrid and visitors will be able to travel free of charge to places such as the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares Regional Park. The buses will operate on weekends and public holidays until the coming 3 November, departing from the Moncloa interchange.
In total, three routes are offered, covering destinations much sought after by hiking and nature lovers: La Pedriza, Puerto de Cotos and the Fuenfría Valley in Cercedilla. The main aim is to encourage public transport for access to these natural spaces, avoid the overcrowding of private vehicles and preserve high-mountain ecosystems.
Tickets must be booked in advance through the service’s official website. This measure, promoted by the Ministry for the Environment, Housing and Agriculture, is part of the ‘Madrid por el Monte’ programme and seeks to consolidate a model of ecological tourism accessible to everyone.
With the arrival of good weather, this is an excellent opportunity to discover (or rediscover) some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes without needing a car. A natural getaway that now begins in the city itself.
