Easter getaway operation in Barcelona: heavy traffic and increased checks
Holy Week gets underway strongly in Barcelona and thousands of drivers have already left the city, generating heavy traffic since early morning. More than 100,000 vehicles have left the metropolitan area in a few hours, setting the pace for mobility at the start of the holidays.
The main outbound routes, especially the AP-7, account for much of the traffic flow. To avoid gridlock, additional lanes have been opened on key stretches towards Tarragona and Girona, although traffic remains heavy at certain times.
The operation also strengthens safety. More than 1,600 officers are monitoring speed and behaviour on the road, with measures active on the usual approaches from the city.
In total, approximately more than half a million vehicles had left Barcelona by Friday. The volume of journeys makes these days one of the most demanding periods for the road network.
The return will not be any easier. A massive influx of cars is expected between Sunday and Monday, anticipating further tailbacks on the approaches to the city.
