It is official: Barcelona's metro will have live music every day
What began as a trial to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Concurs Internacional Maria Canals has become part of the city's soundscape.
After three months of resounding success, the Diagonal station on the L5 will permanently keep the piano which, since March, has been available to anyone who wants to play.
The initiative was born with a clear aim: to bring music closer to metro users. And it has certainly achieved it. The Fundación TMB and the competition itself explain that the instrument has not only been used consistently and respectfully, but has transformed the concourse into a genuine cultural meeting point.
With this decision, the Diagonal platform will no longer be merely a place for hurried passage: it will be an improvised stage where, at any time, a stranger can strike up a melody capable of stopping the urban clock, if only for a moment.
